$12,000 to goal! JoAnn Ross reported $38,120 collected so far, via the club’s raffle for scholarships (to academic and trade schools). ONE WEEK TO GO, with the drawing during the Apr. 22 Rotary meeting. The goal is $50,000: “I know we can do this because we are the greatest club in the universe!” Ross said. She is taking a team to the chamber Happy Hour this week, and can use a few more members. MAY 6 ROTARY MEETING: RSVP REQUIRED
The first of two off-site Rotary lunch meetings will be Mon., May 6, at the Carlsbad Police and Fire Training Center, focusing on active-shooter survival. RSVP is a MUST and will be via Signup Genius, with family and friends welcome. Active CHNR members will be served lunch. Guests, Flex and Rule 85 members will be able to purchase a meal when signing up. NO meeting at the Westin or via Zoom on this date!

MODEL U.N. THANK YOU TO CHNR
Karlye Stein, who attended Rotary’s Model UN sponsored by CHNR, was at the meeting with her mother, Carin Nirac, and Karlye thanked the club for “one of the best experiences of my life at a convention.” Model UN students are given a country to represent, and Karlye was representing Turkey. She had to do so by learning and representing that country’s opinions when a resolution was presented, and her team won Distinguished Country Delegation honors. Karlye, a freshman at CHS, and her mother called it a fantastic experience and thanked Hi Noon for making it possible for her to attend.

CHNR is hosting 40 CHS junior and senior high school AVID students at this one-day leadership conference at the Westin on Fri., Apr. 19, and one more table leader is needed. These are promising students from families without a history of college. AVID’s goal is to help them get accepted at a four-year college or university. • Music Competition Finals: 3pm, Apr. 20 at Dove Library in south Carlsbad. Four regional students competing, including CHNR’s winner (recently accepted to Juilliard). Kreisberg urged all to come and support these finalists. The winner will receive $2,500; the other three will receive $500.
• Successful Work Life Books from CHNR: Kreisberg said 45 copies of “12 Universal Skills: The Beginning Guide to a Successful Work Life,” by Peter Scheele and Nina Bech-Andersen, have been purchased by CHNR, to be donated to an AVID classroom. The books emphasize the soft skills such as problem-solving that are not being taught in classrooms now.
• RYLA Update: Mike Metts and Phil Urbina said this year’s three-day leadership conference for high school juniors at Idyllwild was another success. Urbina, one of the team leaders, called the experience “very fullfilling.” Metts, who is District 5340’s RYLA Chair, has been involved in this program for 24 years.

San Diego Diplomacy Council:
Bringing the World to San Diego

For 40 years, the SD Diplomacy Council has been connecting world leaders, educators, individuals, businesses and organizations with San Diego counterparts to build trust, dialogue, collaboration and innovation across all sectors. It is one of 90 such organizations in the US, and the only one in the San Diego region. Heidi Knuff, the SD Diplomacy Council’s executive director, is hoping to make the council’s reach wider, into North County.
“We are helping to create a more peaceful world, person by person,” she said. The various diplomacy councils work with the US State Department and a variety of other partners, offering professional and student programs and community involvement. Partners range from local to international.
Inbound programming is a key function of the SD Diplomacy Council, which is working with professionals and students from other countries via four-six programs a month in groups five to 25, mostly funded by the State Department. The programs include professional meetings and cultural events, hoping to advance business connections between our country and theirs.
The SD Diplomacy Council also works to foster education-based relationships through youth programs that include summer camps, a global leadership program and academic partnerships.
“We hope that when (these international participants) return home, they will have developed lasting relationships,” as well as a positive opinion of the US, Knuff said.
Looking ahead to 2025, she said the council anticipates working with 800 international visitors from 115 countries, as well as 40 young business fellows.
